Dedaimia liked it a lot; liked the way the author weaved
in and out of Euripides. She thought it would be a good
book to deliver at the end of a semester on WorldLit.

Also does a good job of questioning (and getting the
reader to question) the values of Odysseus in _The
Odyssey_.

_Odyssey_ is about men's values: War, domination,
aggression.

Dedaimia really liked the Ipheginia story.

And the fact that everyone had to learn an art,
science, and craft.

And learn until you die.

Dedaimia was in suspense figuring out what the
consequence would be of Chernon's getting the book.

Raja thought the Greek stuff was pretty uninteresting;
it just went *on* and *on*.

Compares to _Gateway_ and _Venus Plus X_. Prefers
_Gateway_, since the present thread in _Gate to Women's
Country_ serves no purpose *for Stavia*, only for the
reader.

{Opening bites. Gurgling water.}

Rather cruel to garrisons, toy-with-then-kill scene
near the end was unpleasant.

How it arose, how it's stable?

Why does Stavia keep the secret? She doesn't have much
vested in the status quo. (Dedaimia: Her experience
with Chernon in HolyLand makes her understand the
importance of the strictures.)

//////

Gallman didn't like the characterization; they weren't
whole people. Too painful to slog through first ~130
pages.

Ipheginia didn't add much to the story. (Dedaimia,
Kerrie, Raja objected strenuously.)

First part with narrative coherence was the bandit
attack.

Peter Kuchera responded to Raja's complaint about
early slogging:

It was the honeymoon; good delivery of backstory, of
characters, etc.

As with Raja, had some trouble getting started, but
eventually got into it.

Why not tons of homosexuality?

Julie had a hard time starting, and found it initially
annoying. She felt like it was heavy-handed, some of the
points that the author was trying to make. She *did* end
up liking it, but not at first.

Julie was disappointed by _Gate to Women's Country_
because she was reading _Rise of Endymion_ at same time.

//////

Kerrie didn't find it heavy-handed, but it didn't bother
her.

Really scared by HolyLand. Dedaimia almost put the book
down because it was so scary.

Really liked the rescue from HolyLand, with angel
feathers, etc.

Protecting the fertile women would be important after
the holocaust. If they were in the center, defended,
maybe they would get power.
